Herbert Boyer, co-founder of Genentech, a biotechnology company which led the way in genetic engineering, owned this estate in the unincorporated Marin County across the boundaries of Kentfield and Larkspur. According to The San Francisco Chronicle, the property now belongs to a Los Angeles trust.

Concierge Auctions manages the online bid in cooperation with the real estate company Steve Mavromihalis. It is currently listed on $25 million and, according to a news release, will sell without reserve to the highest bidder.

Anyone who buys the land could build up immediately and avoid a lengthy process of public approval. The sale consists of approved plans to build the 27,500 m2 main residence building, caretakers' house, auxiliary buildings, large pool, access roads, viticultures, oaks and horse corrals. Five water wells are located on the site, and an agreement is in place to supply public water to the property at any time.

The 32 acre primary site runs along a flat ridge with 360-degree views of San Francisco, the Bay and its bridges, East Bay and South Marin.

Mavromihalis said in a statement, "King Mountain is the crown gem of Bay Area estate sites. "One property in the midst of thousands of acres of public space, a wealth of water supply and the ability to live totally off the grid, King Mountain's privacy, views, green natural environment, but just minutes away from shopping, cafes and restaurants, and just 12 milles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. This auction offers an exceptionally creative contractor a chance to develop an extraordinary heritage compound in the world."

The auction is from 12 to 19 May.
