The RIU hotel chain has redecorated in spring 2019 the España building, one of the most famous skyscrapers in Madrid, to open the doors of its four-star hotel at the middle of July. The first thing that is remarkable is the hotel's location. The España Building is one of Madrid's most iconic and representative buildings. The 77,000m2 skyscraper was built at one end of Gran Vía in 1948 by Julián and Joaquín Otamendi, although it was not later inaugurated until five years. The 117 meters highest building in Europe, known in its day to be one of the tallest in the Spanish capital.
It has held several uses over these 61 years, including a hotel, offices, apartments and stores, and also many different owners: it has been held by the developer from 2005 until now, by a bank, one of World's most important conglomerates, and by the hotel chain: Metrovacesa, Santander, the Chinese Wanda group, and RIU Hotels which have been its owner since summer 2017.
The hotel chain started to work on the building in January 2018 in order to open the establishment in less than 2 years. The hotel was opened in mid-July.
It is a four-star RIU Plaza España, with 585 rooms spread over 24 floors, and a multi-million euro investment required to give it its current appearance. It is also the first chain establishment in Madrid and Spain's first RIU Plaza (the seventh in the world).
The villa has a living area of more than 1.200 m2, spread over three floors and is accessible through an elevator. In the ground floor is a spacious hall that leads to the open living and dining area with natural light from the floor to the ceiling windows. The kitchen with the cooking island is equipped with high-quality Siemens and Miele electrical appliances.
The master bedroom with ensuite bathroom and dressing room is on the first floor. Guest rooms, a private fitness center and a lounge area with a bar are provided. There are four additional bedrooms, all with bathroom facilities, in the basement which also contains a separate house staff apartment and a spa area. The large garage can accommodate 4 to 5 cars.
The outdoor area has a covered veranda, a dining area and three heated pools with views to the sea. The villa is equipped with smart home technology, air conditioning and floor heating.
